Multitasking is often seem with skepticism. Several studies suggest that splitting attention across multiple activities reduces productivity and increases distraction. After all, when we try to do everything at once, we end up not fully dedicating ourselves to anything. The ideal, experts say, is to focus all your energy on a single task.
But there are exceptions. In some circumstances, it is possible to combine activities without compromising the results, especially when they don't require full attention. That's what I experienced recently: during a walk in the park, I took the opportunity to listen to a lecture through my earphones, one I had been putting off because I couldn't maintain concentration. In one hour, I managed to combine three benefits: physical exercise, learning, and time in nature.
Perhaps it's not something to repeat every day. On other occasions, it may be more rewarding to simply observe the trees, pick up the pace to improve fitness, or sit in front of the computer with paper and pen to better absorb the lecture's content (though, for me, it's harder to concentrate near a computer screen). And many times I enjoy walking with family or friends, WITHOUT worrying about pace and WITHOUT earphones.
In the end, I enjoyed the experience. Walking while learning made me feel productive without losing that sense of ease. It was simple, pleasant, and left me with the feeling that I had used my time well.
When my time is limited, adding one hour (or even half an hour) of walking AND studying AND time in nature would probably bring results very quickly. I imagine what my life would be like with five or six more hours of light exercise AND studying AND time in nature per week! And if you don't have five or six extra hours per week, I suggest you check on your phone how much time you spent on TikTok, Instagram, etc.
Don't guess — check! You might have at least a few minutes to spare!
And perhaps, when I don't know what I should be doing, it's worth trying to do everything at once. But only once in a while!
